Following a request for proposal, the Institute for Surgical Excellence is pleased to announce the selection of 15 leading international institutions to conduct the Fundamentals of Robotic Surgery (FRS) Validation Trial.
In April, 2014, a solicitation was sent out to all of the American College of Surgeons Accredited Educational Institutes (ACS-AEI) members. Each solicited institution had already been recognized by the American College of Surgeons for promoting scholarly activity and enhancing the quality and safety of patient care through simulation-based education and training. There was an overwhelming response to participate in this highly anticipated study.
A formal review committee was convened to analyze the scientific merit of the institution proposals received. The committee selected 15 sites that have vast surgical robotic training expertise and are some of the preeminent robotic facilities in the world. The sites include:

- EndoCAS, University of Pisa– Pisa, Italy
- Hartford Hospital – Hartford, CT
- Imperial College – London, UK
- Lahey Clinic – Boston, MA
- Lehigh Valley Hospital – Allentown, PA
- Louisiana State University Health, New Orleans, LA
- Madigan Army Medical Center– Tacoma/Seattle, WA
- Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education (MITIE)– Houston, TX
- University of Pennsylvania Health System – Philadelphia, PA
The FRS, established with a grant from the Department of Defense and Intuitive Surgical, has been working for over two years to develop a curriculum that imparts critical knowledge necessary to perform robotic surgery and evaluates a surgeon’s proficiency in understanding and performing fundamental skills and tasks.
The validation study is the final, and most critical step in completing and vetting the program. Over 80 robotic experts, medical educators, researchers, and psychometricians met for over two years in a series of four consensus conferences to identify the skills and competencies necessary for robotic surgery. As a result of these conferences, the Fundamentals of Robotic Surgery curriculum was developed with the aim to instruct, as well as assess individual surgeons.
Representatives from all of the validation study trial participants will meet at the Florida Hospital Nicholson Center in Celebration FL for a two day kick-off conference on August 1-2, 2014. The meeting will cover the important issues critical for the acceptance of the study. Topics including didactic requirements, psychomotor challenges, team training and a diverse set of assessment tools will be addressed to insure inter-rater reliability and consistency among all sites and guarantee the highest scientific rigor.
The validation trial will include both expert and novice surgeons from each institution. A didactic curriculum will need to be completed successfully prior to starting the psychomotor and team activities. According to Richard Satava, MD, Principle Investigator, “The validation trial is the culmination of the excellent work of the experts participating in the Fundamentals or Robotic Surgery project and will serve to demonstrate the value of the curriculum for educating, training and assessing surgeons”.
The validation study is scheduled to be completed in mid-2015 and the results will be compiled and published. At the conclusion of the study, it is anticipated that surgical societies will encourage their members to complete and pass the FRS curriculum prior to performing robotic surgery.
